How SFO Airport's IT Department Runs Smoother with Real-Time Flight Information

As one of the busiest airports in the U.S., how does SFO's IT department keep its travelers, operations team, and staff updated on the latest flight information efficiently?

For the IT department at an airport as busy as SFO, keeping track of all the moving parts and flow of flight data is mission critical. They're in charge of delivering accurate, up-to-date flight information to all of their constituents - from the data base which feeds operational systems like the Air Traffic Control tower, as well as powering terminal and gate displays to content on SFO's web and mobile sites. SFO's IT department keeps the airport running smoothly and provides a great customer experience, all by integrating real-time flifo data. Previously, SFO used to pull flifo data from all the airlines that it services, which was a huge job and caused a lot of IT headache. Switching to FlightView's single integrated feed meant that they outsourced all this work to us, reducing the load on their team and helping to operate more efficiently. Here are some examples of how SFO uses this real-time data to save IT time, money and headaches in their daily operations:

1. Single Data API Powers Important Systems. Working with ARINC to integrate flifo data, SFO uses FlightView’s aggregated real-time flight information API, FVXML, to feed their AODB – this powers SFO's terminal FIDS system, website FIDS, and operational systems in SFO's Air Traffic Control Tower.

2. Display Maps Keep Passengers Happy. SFO's terminal and gate display content – live Air Traffic and Airport Delays Maps - help travelers quickly determine where flights are or if delays at other national airports might have an effect on their travel plans. Below is an example of SFO's live Airport Delay Map with Weather on digital displays around the terminal:

3. Web and Mobile Flight Information Reaches Travelers on the Go. Most travelers today are multi-screen - meaning they want real-time information whether they're at home on a desktop computer, on a mobile phone or tablet on the way to the airport, or on a display screen in the terminal. SFO keeps passengers covered no matter where they are by providing web and mobile real-time Flight Tracking and Air Traffic Maps, as well as the ability to share flight status on social media.

SFO goes above and beyond to provide the best customer experience - they recently worked with us to replicate their web and mobile content pages in simplified Chinese for Chinese travelers.

By ensuring the flight information powering everything from the AODB to customer-facing displays and websites is the most accurate and up-to-date, SFO satisfies the needs of its operations team and travelers across all touchpoints. By using FlightView's single integrated flifo feed instead of continuing to aggregate flifo data from each individual airline it services, SFO saves valuable time and IT headaches. The result? Day-to-day operations run more smoothly and customers have a better airport experience since everyone has access to ubiquitous, accurate, real-time flight information.
